A Darling Milk-Bar

The corner milk bar, a wonderful place full of friendly smiles and convenience. Personality plus! I particularly like this local one for the chairs outside, it makes me think the beach is right over the road and all that summer sunshine fun is with us. In Australia, it is the milk bar, in New Zealand it is the diary and if you say the other one in either country, no one is going to understand you. Well that said, I have this suspicion that when my Mum was little, it used to be the milk bar, (I grew up in NZ) so I will have to ask her about that. In fact that may lead to a fascinating conversation about language, its history and other various words specific to certain places. Ted.com has a great talk on how language affects our outlook in life http://www.ted.com/talks/keith_chen_could_your_language_affect_your_ability_to_save_money.html it gave me reason to think about language in a way I never have before. The world is full of interesting information. And there is nothing like running down to the local milk bar to some lollies and then for me coming home to eat them while watch the many talks of Ted.com.

A Row Of Bikes

To be quite honest I had never seen a store with such a tight and tidy display of bikes. I'm also not so sure I would be rushing into buy a bike from here. You might get a great deal, but then there is this whole idea that you are just buying one off the rack, and one has to ask where is the love in that? Okay there is an upside, visually it looks impressive, and reminds me of mathematics, mass, alignment, angles all sold in a mechanical package, so if I want to, there is plenty to learn here. But when I visit a bike shop I like to see the bikes close up, feel their weight, dream about test riding the one that catches my eye. I don't want to miss out on the beauty hidden in the masses. And this all comes from an obsession with riding, a lifelong passion since the beginning when I took my first solo ride down our street, believing Dad was behind me, holding on to the bike. But he wasn't, he had let go and I was free riding myself into a bike riding history. I vividly remember that day and I guess I wish everyone who ever rides gets to experience that passion for cycling, especially when purchasing a new bike, for it is indeed a joyous and exciting moment in time.

The Market Afterlife

This is the eerie afterlife of a place known as the local markets. While it stands empty of people, it still has life, it still emits a busy vibe. Market life requires a fair bit of work that would drive me bananas. All stock is picked up, packed up, stored away in these sturdy metal tubs, at the end of every day trading. And then at some point all the fruit and vegetable stock is carted via fork lift to another dimension within the market property, which I assume is a big fridge although I have never seen it. You don't get to ask questions in a place like this at a time like this about what's happening, instead you get shooed along as fast as your legs can carry you, and fair enough to, it's a safety issue, there are a lot of forklifts running around. Forklifts are fast and furious depending on who is driving them, and can have serious and dangerous consequences if things go wrong. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-8fKqqJYv4 Here's a video link that shows forklifts in action. On that note, enjoy your day and be sure to be safe.

Fixing Things For Everyone

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTfwcLdP5Xk&list=AL94UKMTqg-9BrmELmV5vmHizoUMUbPTSo And I figure you know which song I have lined up for your listening joy while you read. (The first of 100 tracks in the link is related to this post, and the rest is a beautiful bonus find so happy listening.) I love industry, I love seeing trade people go about their jobs, busy in their work, figuring things out bit by bit, correcting, creating, building, dilating, fixing, changing, cutting and managing. These men up high in their little bucket are working on either phone or power lines, and it's dangerous work, but they are dressed in their safety orange overalls so with additional attention to detail, I figure all will be alright. There is so much we take for granted, understanding and expecting things to be in perfect working order all the time. Too many of us get upset if things aren't working, even cursing a little but not enough of us say a  friendly "thanks for fixing things for us" to the workers who put their lives on the line every day. I'm not so sure I would be a perfect lineman. I would be all ohhh no, I'm scared and then there would be no power for anyone, but that's okay, I'm great at lots of other things.

Drive The Lawn, Not Mow The Lawn

Your eyes do not deceive you, this car is covered in fake grass. Well it saves on cleaning the car and is likely to be good conversation starter at any party I suppose. Points for a fairly tidy job too. I once saw a movie all about decorated cars and not remembering the name is making it difficult to link in for you, however I have linked in a website page with some interesting decorated cars for you to smile at:  http://coolmaterial.com/roundup/insanely-decorated-cars-and-vehicles/ The world contains some seriously imaginative people and it seems there is an endless variety of crazy cars once you start to look for them, mostly made in America funny enough. I wonder what it is like to drive a car like this, people would stare at you all the time, take photos and comment to you about the car etc, maybe it is a really very difficult reality to escape. However best of all, you would be bringing a big smile to many who saw you drive on by and that makes it all worth it.

Give More Always, Wink Wink

Give More is the number one (among many number ones) recipe for happiness and don't it feel fine. Give to those in need, give because your heart is singing, give for no reason at all, give to a stranger, give of your heart, your time, your skills, your care. Give because someone asked you for something. Give and experience how it feels to know someone else is better off because you gave to them. Give because it feels amazing to own less stuff than you did a minute ago, there is a beautiful lightness in that. Give because you can, it brings a smile to the face of a stranger, give because you know it is the right thing to do. Give a little, give a lot, give me a round of applause because I made up this MORE sticker and spread the word, give a round of applause to the next person who does something that impresses you. Give to your family all the love you have, in the up times and the down times, and forgive them any slips in their behaviour. Give as much as you can, as often as you can, but remember to give to yourself a little as well.

Little Creatures From The Heavens

Who doesn't love art? Art comes in all forms. And these little figures are made right there in front of you in Paper Mache, lovingly hand sculptured. There is a wire centre for basic form, then layer upon layer upon layer of tiny paper pieces are attached, and it is all finished off with a sealing glaze. It is not an instant process, each piece takes a while to make, sorry I'm not sure how long, I should have asked, but I was too busy picking up the figures and smiling. There is one that catches my heart everytime, a dog, and you can see it on the blanket, to the left side. The dog has personality for sure, he is leaning forward, he has purpose and he is ready to roll. You can find Jesus Moreta in a number of places in and around Melbourne creating his creatures; I have always seen him in Elizabeth St working away. If you see him, stop, have a chat, and take home a little piece of handmade, with a story to tell. Jesus_tiempo80@hotmail.com.

A World Of Stamps

It was my pleasure to meet Allan a few days back at the best little library in the world, Melbourne City Library. Upstairs in the study room, I had popped in to make sense of many bits of paper I had collected that day, quietly settling when I noticed a man next to me going through a tin of old stamps. When I say going through, I mean meticulously selecting, examining and placing each stamp into the folder pages that lay on the table in front of him. We chatted and he enthusiastically told me some interesting details about the world of stamps. The tin on the table had stamps dated at 1892, mostly German and if you look at the top left hand corner, third row down, there is one of Hitler. Allan explained the meaning of a mint stamp, that some stamps are hinged and some are unhinged, pointed out the date details and another fascinating thing called restamping. A restamped stamp occurs when resources are tight, (a war for instance), the answer being to simply take an existing stamp and print on top of it, which makes perfect sense. It is a lesson for today in a world where reuse needs to be standard. History is important, and the world of stamps can teach anyone a lot. If you are interested in finding out more, be sure to visit Max, in the Port Phillip Arcade, up the road from the library, he has a collection as big as big, from travels all over the world. After this chance meeting, I'm full of wow, thanks Allan for sharing your time and passion for stamps, a treasured moment.

Tropicana Goodness

Approximately half way up Elizabeth Street on the left hand side is the best little juice bar in town. Every juice that comes from there is yum yum yum, and the availability of what's on offer is no small selection. It is guaranteed fresh, tastes amazing and full of nutritious goodness. You can even get dates in your smoothie if that's what takes your fancy. Service with a smile = ticked, outside seating = ticked, enticing street display = ticked. So far so good, and they do breakfast, the bacon and eggs type too, sandwiches, wraps and snacks etc for lunch. Coffee and cake, yes, but this is Melbourne, so that mandatory. But what grabs me is the decor, I feel extra excited when I visit Tropicana, I feel like I have just gotten off the cruise ship and am now in an island paradise, I feel safe here, I feel like all I need is catered for. It's all that fruit, it wraps you in a cloak of goodness and let's not forget everything is served with a big smiles. I've been thrilled everytime I come and sure as sure I will be back, and if you come visit me, I will take you here because I want to share Tropicana Juice Bar with everyone! 213 Elizabeth St, Melbourne City, opposite the GPO building.

I See A Ship In The Harbour

I see a ship in the harbour, not only is this a line from a favourite song of mine, it is a reality. Here you go, set the mood and play while you read, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftJZomwDhxQ Aside from the fact I seem to be full of rhyme and rhythm today, I swear I have a spring in my step larger than life, I want to reminisce about a ship in harbour I had the fortune of seeing a little while ago. To be point specific, I was standing in the area I call the first round bit of Battery Rd post Nelson Place, Williamstown, Melbourne and if you get a chance, it is a nice place to be for a moment in time. Here you are, likely just having left the quaint and village like Williamstown and now standing on what feels like the edge of the world. Suddenly the mighty ocean is stretched out before you, stealing your breath in its magnificence and then you look up to see the tiniest detail of a ship making its way to the port. The sun may be shining or the clouds playing songs for the rain to dance to, either way, it is likely to be a bit blowy, yet this only adds to the atmosphere. The sea is a very special place to be. Here you breathe life, big lungfuls of beautiful life. Stick around for a while, you might see ships leaving for faraway places, and with that view get carried away on a fantasy to anywhere your mind will carry you. But before I go, let me let you in on the night view, eerie and dark, look to the right or straight ahead and you might catch a view of a cruise ship, all lights on, like a magical little Christmas decoration sailing away from the world in joy, and then look to the left and you will see Melbourne City and surrounding bay area's showing off their own light display leaving you with a flavour of excitement just like a new mint lolly in your mouth.

With Just A Little Thought

With just a little thought to more than tight economics or the bare practical needs, our cities can be wonderful places to be. I say go all the way, for as long as it is structurally sound, something that is built to last with aesthetics in mind brings so much more to a city than just filling a need. Here we have Webb Bridge in Docklands, Melbourne. I had the pleasure of crossing it one day to meet a friend on the other side. This is a foot bridge, it has ramps and stairs and a bicycle lane, it has curves and it has a covering that takes you into a tunnel like play zone for the mind as you traverse through it. Webb Bridge stands alone, not a simple tack-on to the side of the nearest car parade. This bridge connects apartments and restaurants of docklands to the CBD. Along the way you are treated to a stunning view of boats, big bridges and the sun shining its magic on the water, and as you come off the bridge, you walk through small parkland, a playground and sculptures that encourage thoughts of mechanics and how things work in life. I love places like this, they open my mind sing to my soul.

Welcome to Rendezvous Books in the heart of Melbourne's CBD.  This shop is primarily devoted to romance novels that take on swish buckling adventures, into the world of regency decadence and through romance suspense all waiting for you to pick a book and get carried away. That's not all; there are thousands of titles which mean thousands of adventures. You can come into Shop 11, Tivoli Arcade at 235 Bourke St in the City and let your eyes roam over the incredible selection and be delighted by what's on offer or you can visit the website and order direct from there. http://www.rendezvousbooks.com/ It is simply romance heaven. I wonder who their audience is and I suspect it is bigger than I might have thought at first for this shop has been successful for a number of years, so I asked my friend the internet and found this interesting article by the Huffington Post, an edgy New York legend in reporting, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/anne-browning-walker/romance-novels-smart-women_b_1660308.html So down with the stereotypes, in with the new times, smart women read romance and Rendezvous Books has all the romance you need!

My Last Prawn Did Taste Mighty Fine

Okay, I'm in a flux now because this is one wonderful pizza, a small for only $8, jam packed with all the goodies, it is covered in prawns. Firstly lets praise the pizza, made fresh at Luigi Boys pizzeria about 2 mins from my house, best value pizza I think I have ever come across and served with a big dose of friendly service. All their pizzas are quality, all taste like perfection and all finish off with a feeling of satisfaction. If you are in the area, then be sure to pop into Luigi Boyz at 474A Murray Road, Preston, Melbourne. Now here is the reason I am in a flux, if you know anything about what is going on in the world's oceans, the eating prawn is definitely not a great idea, you only need to look at what has happened in Bangladesh for a quick reality bite. And unfortunately the reality of what we have done to the oceans is so intense, that mentioning it here is appropriate. No longer is it inappropriate to mention the state of the world anywhere, at anytime, we can all do something about it, we can all help and we should all be talking about it. Ours is a beautiful place, so let's work to make it even better. A great place to start is by watching this Ted talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/jeremy_jackson.html then talk about it, reconsider your buying power, definitely and completely say no to shark fin anything and workout the origin of where your next meal of Tuna is from. It is not only appropriate to talk about the state of the environment, it is also very important for you, your children, your grand children. I have had my last prawn; I'm off to find a sustainable alternative :)

The Best Biscuits EVER! Fox's Biscuits

Post Christmas sales at the supermarket tend to be a chocolate lovers dream. That is exactly where I found Fox's Biscuits. A phenomena like no other. Half price, perfect munching condition, totally taste heaven. Here is a quality biscuit, loaded in chocolate, none of this lightly coated formulation, no, 100% satisfaction. Big biscuits. Most delish with enough variety in the box to keep you entertained. I can be particular with my chocolate, but Fox's scored it right with every single biscuit, you hear me? I am in heaven with a box of Fox's in front of me. Only trouble is with a litre of full cream milk (the fatter the better) to accompany my biscuits, I admit to finishing off one box in a couple of hours, just too yummy. I think I went back to the supermarket 4 days a week and by the second week, only one box was left on the shelf. No competition, no one else had a chance, I came from behind and with the intensity of football legend scoring his first century goal, I reached forward and owned my prize. Roll on Jan 2014; I am already hanging out for my post Christmas Fox's Biscuits binge. These are English made, quality in mind biscuits, http://www.foxs-biscuits.co.uk/ and this link will take you there.

Taking Photos Of Interesting Things

Sitting in an outdoor cafe in the town I spied a man taking photos of interesting things and I thought it would be of interest to take a photo of a man taking photos of interesting things. I wanted a natural shot, so looking innocently occupied, I waited for that moment and then snapped away. But being honest and lovely, I then showed the man the photo I had taken of him taking interesting photos and he smiled and we chatted about the obsession we share of taking photos of interesting things. I imagine he is reading this, I wonder if he recalls what he saw through his lens that day, I imagine he does, I wish I had asked what it was, but that's life sometimes isn't it, you get caught up in your own moments and forget to see the other view. I was looking north, he had been facing east, and I missed all that east in my obsession with north. And in the end really all there is to say is Thank-You Paul for sharing this moment and allowing me to use your this photo.

Meet Chillibean

Meet Chillibean, a mini pom and that's short for Pomeranian. This one is cute, he has had a haircut and at first glance, I thought of fox or little bear cub. Chillibean wears expression, his eyes are wise, and he seems to look at straight at you as if he has already worked you out. The morning I meet Chillibean, he was off to the hospital, a small procedure required. I'm sure everything went to plan and now he is at home being wonderful. After a little look at Pomeranians on the internet, with their intense amount of fluff, I think what makes Chillibean so excellent is the hair cut, it has given edge to his look, allows his face more strength, and removes him for the toy dog phenomena where strangely these dogs are more like toys and victims of dress ups than bounding balls of dog awesomeness. Thankfully there are people in the world like Chillibeans owners, keeping it real for the dogs.

Ants Are Insects I Love

This is an ant. I love ants, I have big respect for ants, they all operate within tight social organisations, they are all busy and purposeful and on top of all that, they clean up after themselves. I will never use ant killer, I might fake spray it around if someone insists that I use it, and I will collect and bin all baits. I would rather spend an hour watching ants than ever killing them. Ants form part of an intelligent ecosystem that does more than clean up left over crumbs. As you would expect the internet can teach you much about ants, I'm linking you to a David Attenborough clip as a great intro on the life of ants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er-OnJCn1gg Here you will see ants dancing and swimming, yay for ants! I hope if you aren't a big ant fan, after watching this clip you will at least be an admirer. You may as well get use to them, they live everywhere on earth except the oceans, and the Polar Regions, click on this link to find out more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant

The Emu Ran Away

Meet Jessica, she is a street artist with quite a talent. Working in an Aboriginal style of art, she creates pieces that as far as I have witnessed all contain animals. As I am writing this, I am aware how little I know about her art. Does each painting tell a story? How much of an individual style does she use or is she painting in a style particular to one place in Australia? Do the colours signify anything? I would like to know the history of art in Australia, does anyone know, has anyone studied its origins? Are these important? I guess so, history is important the world over, but it's funny that I even think about these things, usually I choose not to see reference in art, preferring to interpret what is on display for myself. Why has Jessica's art had this affect on me? I would love to see Jessica paint large and enormous pieces, like the Emu or the Fish shown here, the Emu having caught my eye as I walked past. It illustrates life, there is movement in the paint, and Jessica pours her whole heart into each piece. Sadly she is not represented by a gallery, sadly I say for I think she has talent. If anyone reading this blog can help out with a contact to a gallery, let me know. Otherwise you can find her around the streets of Melbourne's CBD quietly working away while selling her small canvases for only $25 each. Thank-You Jessica, you made my day with your Emu :)

4 Colour Visual Symphony

Here is a simple way to liven up any laneway. 4 colours and we're done. It is visual symphony in action and it made me smile, plus likely it has made a number of people smile so it has in fact achieved something just by existing. I would like to thank the artist by baking them a chocolate cake for their efforts, icing decorated with a blanket of blue, green, orange and yellow sprinkles. I call the moments when I see things like this laneway door, moments of sunshine and I am happy.

Brothers In Arms

G-Star fans unite, these two brothers are leading the charge. It was one of those moments when you spotted a factor of interest and thought, ohhh I must take a photo! and so you did, with permission of course and as you can see here the permission was obviously forth coming with smiles and a touch of pride too. Not quite twins, maybe not even brothers, in fact possibly just good friends, either way they are happy to be hanging out together, they look like friends forever and ain't that sweet in the world we live today. I wonder what it would be like to have a best friend from the beginning to the end, say someone you met in primary school and have stayed super close to through it all. I wonder what percentage of people in the world get to experience this, have the numbers added up differently over the centuries, how has lifestyle affected it all, what will the world hold for best friends in the future? Hmmm, its an interesting thought. I may not have had one best friend who has been there right through, but I am lucky in that I have had lots of friends with a select few best friends and even though some of those friends are now having lives elsewhere, it's cool, the love will always be there and when we meet again, it's going to be magic.

Beatrice Dances For Me

This was a summer evening, and something was growing in the background. A cloud was on the rise and it took me by surprise when I came down the road on my bike. As I looked up and saw her looming not that far in the distance I named her Beatrice, the way all big tremendous storms are named. Beatrice never developed into a storm, cut down in her formative hours, yet she still had beauty and strength and the power to take my breath away. Viewing the photo now if you ask my Beatrice looks a lot like she is dancing, head raised high facing east, arms in a dancers point, moving to the rhythm of the wind, it's poetry in motion, the momentum inviting you to join in. Do you love the weather? Do you let it move you? Do you have a favourite type of weather? Do you sing with the whispering winds? And do you tell your secrets to a sun shining down? I love weather, the heat, the storms, the rain, the snow, and all the different faces it shows us each day. Yay for the weather, yay.

Conversations Between Galahs

Ahh so pretty pretty, the Galah, a native Australian bird. I admit my knowledge of birds is not nearly as good as my Nanas was. She seemed to know all the birds and their songs wherever she went. I needed a little help to identify the two birds in the photo and that is where Jon Atkinson came in handy. http://jon-atkinson.com/Australia%20Birds.html. A moments thought about how amazing the internet is providing worlds of knowledge at our fingertips, ah wow, incredible. Galahs form strong life long bonds with their partners. The two here, sitting together, I wonder what they think about, do the tweet each other, do they sometimes talk with just body movements? Whatever they do, they made me smile as I looked skyward and spotted them. Ahh so pretty pretty and the rest of my day was sprinkled in smiles at the memory.

Fruit Of The Gods For All

Reason 107 why I love my neighbourhood. Some kind soul has grown lemons and placed them on the nature strip for anyone to take. I took 3, they were delicious and large and nutritious and made my lunch flavoursome. I'm lucky to live in a neighbourhood with fruit trees on almost every property, and while not all neighbours put their fruit out for the taking, there are a large number of trees where the fruit hangs over the property line. If you know how to pick a piece of fruit, (give it a light tug and only if it comes into your hand with ease, it is ready), it is accessible and not strictly in someone's yard, then it is completely acceptable to help yourself to God's spoils. This summer I have had apricots, oranges, apples, lemons, figs, grapes, nectarines and loquats. Yummy yum yum yum. And being straight off the tree, it tastes best.  I would like to see a world where if everyone who had fruit trees took the time to pick the fruit they could no more eat or give to friends and offer it to people who pass on by. I have a feeling this would be a good thing and all any fears we have over why we shouldn't do this may well prove to be false.  Or in the least, bag up the goodies and head down to the nearest kitchen for those in need.

The Happy Dog Runs Free

See the dog run, see the dog chase the ball, see the dog happy in the outdoor space that allows him to run and be free. Do you see it too? Do you see how happy Fred he is? He is practically bounding along and off on an adventure. Lucky dog, joyous dog, hungry dog, happy dog. Where is Fred going, where has Fred been? Who throws Fred balls to chase and where might that lead? Do you think there is a chance that Fred will run away? Not because he intended to, because he was simply too excited to contain himself and he ran, he ran so far away, he just ran, he ran all night and day, he couldn't get away . . .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Pq0xYr3L4 and before I know it I have burst into song with this a piece of wonderful from my teenage years. So maybe Fred was going somewhere after all because somehow he has lead me into musical memory lane and I'm thrilling to the likes of A-Ha, Twisted Sister, Toto, Men At Work, and Survivor, trying desperately to finish my blog, but taking forever because a case of up, jump and boogie has taken me elsewhere! Stillness Comes To Town

And instantly I am transported to somewhere like Mexico, Spain or any of many other hot destinations in the world. The brilliant blue cloudless sky framing the industrial building, creates the clean feeling of desolation, as if a mysterious disease recently swept the town, all the people quietly leaving, only the town framework left standing. The sadness thick but invisible for a day until the sun shone bright and dried up all such emotion, leaving only stillness in its place. It is the strangest thing this town has ever seen. At exactly midday and not a minute longer a well trained and very hungry dog comes striding down the road, on the hunt for his master . .

Miffy My Cute Hero

Welcome to the world of Miffy, maybe one of my favourite ever childhood book characters, except for some reason I always thought Miffy was a boy. Now Miffy here is dressed in pink, but most often Miffy is dressed in orange as I remember it, maybe that is where the confusion came in to play. I have since found out there is a boy character dressed in blue.  I can't tell you what the characters got up to, but I can tell you the cute overload has affected me right through into adulthood, infact this may well be the reason I love all the cute things in our world including Asian stationery stores where in I could lose hours just picking things up and putting them down again. Dick Bruna created Miffy back in 1955, the following link will give you a tidy little run down about Miffy  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miffy But the one in the photo above is a cupcake of all things and yes I had to stop myself from buying it. I strongly suspect if it was actually a chocolate cupcake, then I would have purchased all the Miffy cupcakes in store and gone home with stomach pains but joyous memories.

However I’m also sure as sure can be he knew just what was what and that all was well in his world.  Looking from the outside view, I love the colours in this photo, the feathers matching the bridge railing to almost but not quite the same shade of cold. And I love the way My Winterbird has puffed and arranged his feathers each playing a vital part in his survival so he looks content and warm, but still perhaps because I felt the cold so much that day, he looks a little like being warm takes all the energy he had managed to gather. I can never know his full story, I have other places to be, things to see that occupy my time, but I can certainly appreciate the vision he shows when I am lucky enough to be in his presence.
